Sincere Compliments

Updated: Aug 27, 2021

Look people in the eye. If you'll slow down and really look, you'll find something to compliment. There's power in eye contact. Power to see the soul.

Happy National Compliment Day! You’re looking marvelous, by the way.

For my fellow readers, acclaimed writer Ursula K. Le Guin has passed away at the age of 88. This makes me sad. You’ll hear many of her quotes in the next months as I wrap my head around the fact that there won’t ever be any new quotes from her. Many of her words shaped my understanding, my opinions, and my self-image.

The greatest compliment I could give her on this National Compliment Day, is that she reminded me of my mother. Prickly, endearing, and insightful, she was only two years younger than my mother. They were of the same generation. Every time I read an interview of her I would think, “You and Mom would’ve been thick as thieves.”

Le Guin had a keen sense for seeing the whole person, the whole character, the whole story. My mother had a keen sense for seeing the soul. “Look people in the eye. If you’ll slow down and really look, you’ll find something to compliment. A compliment must be sincere. People know when it isn't. Look for it. There’s power in eye contact. Power to see the soul.”

MEMORY PROMPT: Do you have a favorite author? Someone whose words feel right to you? And what about making eye contact?
