Happy Spouse’s Day! If you’ve got one, you know what work they are. But, so very worth it!
By the time I arrived on the scene, Mom and Dad were solidly in team mode. Dad killed spiders. Mom read to me. Dad was a pushover. Mom was the muscle. Dad scraped my car windows. Mom tucked notes into my camp duffel. As they aged, they kept it up. Their marriage was truly a team effort. Dad cared for Mom when her health failed, and after she died, he missed her fiercely, but he said, “She’d be so mad at me if I wished her back.” Instead, he took solace in their memories.
They set a good example for David and me. Our decades together have been filled with joy, heartache, laughter, grief, worry, elation, and love. When we were 16, we chose our song: Journey’s “Open Arms”. I know. I know. Give us a break. It was 1981, after all. The song has served us well, but for our next 30 years, I’m proposing a new song: The Goo Goo Dolls' “Boxes.” A line of the lyrics says "You are the memory that won't ever fade." I don’t know if Mom and Dad had a song, and it's too late to ask them those questions now, but this one would’ve served them well.
MEMORY PROMPT: Do your parents have a song? Do you? Jot down the lyrics and the memories they invoke.
