Day 54

Day 54: It’s Foodsday in this week of Favorites, and food happens to be one of my favorite things, which I blame completely on my mother.

We used to call her the “Food Pusher” because she was obsessed with feeding anyone who walked into our house. I don’t believe anyone EVER left our house hungry. She would list every item in the pantry and refrigerator until you identified what “sounded good” to you.

Even after her health began to fail, she ALWAYS had the makings for hot fudge sundaes. It was TRADITION in the same epic fiddler-singing-about-it-on-a-roof sense of tradition. I’m sure it’s a recipe she got in a Homemaking Meeting or from a neighbor, but to us, it was HER hot fudge recipe. The ultimate comfort food. It held love and acceptance and happiness. It never failed to fill that empty spot in your soul.

You might be thinking “that’s a lot of pressure for one recipe” but I’m telling you, it seemed magical when I was a kid. My children hold the hot fudge in high esteem even though they don’t remember my mother, because we continued to make it whenever my siblings got together. My kids still associate the warm goodness with trips to Milo. Why does that happen with food? I think it’s because many of our memories are stored in our tastebuds.

So, without further ado, here is the recipe. Cue the fiddler:

1 12 Oz. bag chocolate chips 1 can sweetened condensed milk 1 cube (4 Oz.) butter 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Mom warmed the whole concoction in her double boiler. If you don’t have one, warm it in a saucepan, but be careful because it’s prone to scorch.

NaDine served it over vanilla ice cream with chopped nuts, whipped cream, and a maraschino cherry on top, but you can eat it however you like. The leftovers get all thick and chocolate-caramel-like in the fridge. My daughter will eat a cold spoonful of it when no one is looking. Remember. No judgment. It’s only filled with love. #MomsCompanyTowels #comfortfood #tastebudmemories #NaDinesHotFudge #foodsday
