Day 38: Today is Wordsday in my TowelWorld. It’s also the week of NO, which led my thought process directly to the times I’ve heard “No” concerning writing. In my first series, the main character is of Mormon faith. When I moved to the point of submitting my work, two things became clear. One: The story was not Mormon enough. Two: The story was too Mormon. The answer was dependent on who was providing the opinion.
I don’t “write to market” or tweak characters so they’re more easily pigeonholed into the rubric of the day. My mother taught me to be at peace with myself - with my decisions. She would say “you’re the only one who has to live with every single decision you make, so don’t make them for others. Make them for you.” Good advice, Mom.
The series I’m writing now is very different from my last, yet there will still be a detail in there somewhere that will be too much or not enough.
