Day 313

The book is always better than the movie

Day 313: Today, I’m ruminating upon book vs. movie characters. Did you know that Jane Austen rarely gave her readers physical descriptions of the characters? I was surprised when I learned that, because I've read all of her works and I have very clear images of her characters in my head. But, sure enough, there are few. Austin caused my imagination to create those characters.

Of course, then I see the movie, and it replaces everything my imagination worked so hard to conjure up. Sometimes the actors are close, and other times my imagination went a completely different route when casting the role in my head. That’s why I haven't given a lot of specific physical description in my stories. I’ve tried to stay general, only giving little hints about their traits, so that your imagination could whip up its own perfect Riley or Jocelyn. I want the reader to imagine for themselves. It’s so much more fun that way.

Have you ever seen a movie adaptation of a book whose casting missed the mark for you?
