Day 301

Thanks for being the world's best!

Day 301: To bring this week of weird tips full circle, I’ve been thinking about the ways Mom made the Sabbath Day special.

Her Sundays were a veritable smorgasbord of traditions that were uniquely “her.” It wasn’t that she did anything extravagant or outlandish, it was more about turning the day into something reverential, yet comfortable, at the same time. Sunday at her house was a day to look forward to - something you could count on - something you didn’t want to miss.

Part of Mom’s Sunday tradition was to write thank you notes. She didn’t just write them for gifts received - she wrote them to people who had given a great talk or musical number at church. She wrote them to people who had come to visit her during the week. She would write a note, out of the blue, to someone who had been on her mind. And if she witnessed someone doing something nice for someone else, they, too, got a thank you note.

She had an old shoebox filled with blank cards, ready for sending. Some were serious. Some were silly. Some were glittery. Some were older than I was. Whenever I saw her sitting at the dining table with her Size 9 shoebox of thank you cards, the sight said “Sunday” to me. If I try, I can still see her there, pen in hand, intently expressing thanks to her next recipient.

Thank you, Mom, for being the world’s best to me!
