Day 239

Lunch Note written on a napkin: Make is a magnificent Monday! Love, Mom

Day 239: There are several things I miss about sending kids back to school now that they're all married and out of the nest. There was a ritual of sorts. Shopping for clothing and school supplies, meet-the-teacher nights, making locker magnets, and the traditional first-day-of-school ABC pancakes, which transitioned to A pancakes after my son assumed that those were all acceptable grades, rather than the beginning of the alphabet.

The tradition I miss most is writing notes on their napkins for their sack lunches. A joke. A smiley face. A homework reminder. Good luck wishes for an exam. On Wednesdays, I tried my best to draw a camel for Humpday. On Fridays I reached far into my vocabulary to come up with F words that described Friday - fabulous, fantastic, first-class, first-rate, fabled, famed, fanciful. You get the idea. During those years, my husband didn't see the fabulousness of a first-rate lunch note, but now that I only pack lunches for the two of us, he might be getting a second chance to witness the charm.
