Day 168

Day 168: Happy Father’s Day to these men who have shaped my definition of fatherhood. Hands on. Heart full.

My dad was a stake patriarch for many years. He gave more than 800 patriarchal blessings in that time, and for each and every one, he prepared himself so that he could be counted on to be in tune with the Spirit. Yet, for all those important blessings, the one I will always remember was a father’s blessing he gave me after Mom died. I hadn’t been sleeping. I was grieving, and I had three little kids to care for. I was kind of a mess. He laid his gnarled, rough hands on my head and blessed me with peace. I can still feel the comfort of that blessing 22 years later.

From him, and my father-in-law, and now, in the examples of my husband and my sons, I have learned that being a father means being “hands on.” Being present. Being involved. And doing so with hearts full of love. There is nothing more gratifying than watching your son be a hands-on-heart-full father.

To all of you who work so hard to be a hands-on-heart-full kind of dad, thank you. I hope you have a happy Father’s Day. #MomsCompanyTowels #WeekOfDad #HandsOnHeartFullDad
