Day 156: My mother used to say “If wishes were fishes . . .” when one of us would wish for something outlandish or unreasonable. I didn’t fully understand, but I knew she was pointing out that we were being outlandish or unreasonable.
Have you heard the saying “If wishes were fishes, we’d all cast our nets” or “if wishes were fishes, we’d be swimming in riches?” They both hearken to an old Scottish nursery rhyme, which continues “If wishes were horses, all beggars would ride.”
All three concepts make me stop to consider their meaning. I mean, if you could cast your net and haul in a whole load of wishes like the burly guys on those Alaskan fishing boats, would you do it? And if you had a boatload of wishes, would you spend them on riches? The one that causes pause for me is the thought of a beggar wishing for transportation. That puts it in perspective, doesn’t it?
We humans love the idea of making a wish and having it come true, but in reality there is almost always what my mother called “elbow grease” involved in realizing the wishes of our hearts. Make a wish. Then make it happen. #MomsCompanyTowels #IfWishesWereFishes #MakeAWishThenMakeItHappen #ElbowGrease
