Day 142

Memorials: It seems we need something to tether our dearly departed ones to earth, something to mark their time here, so they will never be forgotten. JanaLee Cox Longhurst

Day 142: We’re coming up on Memorial Day soon and I’ve begun thinking about the ways we memorialize those we love.

A memorial is defined as something, especially a structure, established to remind people of a person or event.

Last year in May we took our first trip to Hawaii and visited Pearl Harbor. We actually ended up there on Mothers Day. I’ve already shared my complicated feelings about Mother’s Day, so you can rightly assume that with all that going on in my head, it was overwhelming to add the experience of Pearl Harbor on the same day. What a solemn memorial it is. I thought about my father serving in WWII because of what happened at Pearl Harbor. As we rode the boat out to the memorial, I watched the young men in their smart uniforms who were steering us, young men who were the same young age as most of those whose names appear on the memorial. It was a sobering and reverent experience to stand in silence and honor the lives lost in service to our country. It was hard to comprehend how such a tragedy occurred in the midst of such tropical beauty. The memorial stands as a burial site for families to visit - a tangible place of rest - when most of those lost could not be given a proper burial.

It seems we all need something that tethers our dearly departed ones to earth, something that marks their time here so that we will never forget. I’m feeling like this week will be a study on those markers - and the ways we remember. #MomsCompanyTowels #MemorialWeek #InMemoriam
